McGlothin was astonished by that statistic, she said, and knew what she had in the works was crucial to growing that percentage. Only 12% of children’s books published in 2019 had African American primary characters, subjects or settings, according to the Cooperative Children’s Book Center. “Knowing how to read impacts your life.”Īnd through that creating process, she found other goals to reach with her writing. “One of my ‘whys’ in writing is to get kids to fall in love with reading,” McGlothin said. McGlothin went straight to work to bring the story to life. She talked to a friend who’s a toymaker about what type of character would work best as the song’s subject that friend then sent her down the uncharted path of storytelling. When the pandemic happened, McGlothin started making children’s’ songs, she said, and was going to release the one she sang to her niece about washing your hands. ![]() “All of this is my way of giving back if we can teach kids to read, it’s a lifelong victory.” “So much of education - especially in elementary - happens through song,” McGlothin said. But taking on the craft of authorship proved to be a worthy challenge, she said. McGlothin is also the outgoing chairof the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Torrance Chamber of Commerce, a board member at the Richstone Family Center in Hawthorne and part of the national board for the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation.Īs a singer-songwriter, McGlothin is no newcomer to the creative scene. Now she wants to teach the song to children around the world, she said. “She’d go play with her brother or the dog, and when she’d come back, I’d say, ‘OK, you’ve got to wash your hands.’”Įventually, McGlothin started singing “wash your hands” in a jingle tune, which then had her niece going to the sink with a smile on her face every time.
